Road to Wembley: The Unsung Heroes behind County’s Journey

High Peak Hatters travelling to Wembley

Travelling to the Vertu Trophy final at Wembley, I was struck by the number of individuals and groups working with the club to enhance the supporter experience on match days and beyond.

Most noticeable were the many coaches, some from as far afield as the West Midlands, pressed into service to transport the thousands of County fans down to the nation’s capital. There were several groups involved; Edgeley Conservative Club Coaches took thirteen coaches, SK6 County Coaches seven, the Fingerpost Flyer group took their usual single coach and County’s own transport provider, Beeline VIP Coaches, took several as well.

With our light blue neighbours from up the road travelling to London on the same day, finding enough vehicles to mount such a professional and slick organisation was a feat of mammoth proportions.

Transport wasn’t the only aspect of the day to benefit from private enterprise. The Scarf Bergara Wore podcast are preparing a fan-led documentary of the day using video clips sent in by supporters, covering their whole journey from home, down to Wembley and back again.

Voluntary work around the club isn’t limited to awaydays, of course; closer to home Help The Hatters do tremendous work to keep Edgeley Park looking spick and span for the start of every match.

All those involved in complementing the club’s own work to keep the supporters involved from day to day put a tremendous amount of work into their various projects. Among them are the members of the Stockport County Supporters’ Co-operative, who meet with the club on a regular basis to raise any issues that arise before they become a problem.
