Here’s to the man from Uruguay
Danny’s statue was unveiled by the Uruguayan Ambassador, Mr César Rodriguez Zabala on 8th May 2023 at County’s last home game of the season, against Hartlepool United.
Our sculptor, Hannah Stewart came to the attention of the Co-op due to her fantastic work on Lily Parr, the first female professional footballer, which is displayed at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
The campaign to raise £60,000 for the statue and plinth took two years and included many fundraising initiatives. Our friends at Stockport Gin created a Bergara Gin based on South American botanicals. The launch event was hosted by Steve Bellis and Nick Lee, with County legends, Mike Flynn, Jim Gannon, Chris Beaumont, Bill Williams, Peter Ward and Paul Jones as our guests.
A crowd funding page was created with an initial donation of £2,000 each from the Co-op and Help The Hatters. County fans provided tremendous support to this appeal and amazing generosity. This was boosted by an incredible pledge of £10,000 from County owner, Mark Stott. The Bergara family gifted several of Danny’s shirts and scarves for auction and Phil Brennan kindly donated the entry fee from his 100 Club book launch at Bask.
The Co-op are proud to honour Danny Bergara, the man who won promotion for the first time in 24 years, led the Club to Wembley four times and truly put Stockport County on the map!
