Overview of the Co-op
The Stockport County Supporters’ Co-operative is a democratically elected organisation, regulated by the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA). We are committed to representing both our members and the wider Stockport County fanbase.
At a time when supporter voices are more important than ever in shaping the future of football, the Co-operative plays a vital role in ensuring that County fans are heard, respected, and actively involved in the life of their club.
We hold regular meetings with senior officials at Edgeley Park and engage with key external stakeholders — including Stockport Council and the new Independent Football Regulator — to influence decisions that affect supporters and the long-term future of Stockport County FC.
A Legacy of Fan Power
The Co-operative has its roots in the Supporters’ Trust, which took control of Stockport County Football Club in 2005 — a pivotal and challenging time in the club’s history. Following the Club’s administration in 2009, the Supporters’ Co-operative was formed with a completely new board, continuing the spirit of fan ownership and acquiring shares in the Club.
These shares were held until the club’s takeover by Mark Stott in 2020, after which the Co-op refocused its mission. Today, it continues to evolve with a renewed commitment to representation, accountability, and the long-term sustainability of Stockport County FC.
Providing Fans with a Stronger Voice
At the heart of the Supporters’ Co-operative is a commitment to giving fans a unified voice and a genuine say in the direction of their club. In an era where supporter engagement is not just encouraged but required under new regulations from the Independent Football Regulator, the Co-op stands ready to fulfil this role with professionalism and passion.
Its primary aims include:
- Acting as a bridge between fans and the club, providing a strong, unified voice that engages directly with senior officials at Edgeley Park. Regular discussions cover everything from ticket pricing and stewarding to car parking and the long-term development of the stadium.
- Working alongside the club when interests align, such as during the successful lobbying of Stockport Council in support of the ground development plans.
- Safeguarding the future of Stockport County FC through the management of the Guardian Account — a ring-fenced fund that exists solely to protect the existence of the football club in the borough, should it ever face existential risk again.
- Protecting Edgeley Park by maintaining its status as an Asset of Community Value. This legal designation, secured through cooperation with Stockport Council, gives local stakeholders the right to bid if the ground is ever put up for sale. The current designation runs until 2029.
- Adhering to the values and regulations of the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) — the national, democratic body representing football fans across England and Wales.
Beyond Football: Supporting Community and Inclusion
The Co-operative is also proud of its wider role in the community. It has worked closely with local charities such as The Wellspring, Walthew House, and Forever Friends of Uganda, helping to foster a sense of social responsibility among County supporters.
Recognising the importance of securing the next generation of fans, the Co-op sponsors initiatives like the Community Trust’s flag bearer scheme and provides free tickets to young people involved in Community Trust programmes — ensuring that the spirit of County continues to inspire and engage for years to come.
Membership Matters
Being a member of the Supporters’ Co-operative comes with tangible benefits, including discounted travel to away matches, priority access to special events, and reduced rates for evenings with club legends and personalities. But more importantly, it offers every fan a stake in the future of Stockport County.
