About the Stockport County Supporter’s Co-operative Guardian Account:
Stockport County have been in existence since 1883, providing structure to supporters Saturdays from season to season, with varying fortunes. From the highs of an eighth place finish in Division One in 1998 to the lows of relegation to the Conference North in 2013, the one constant amidst all the ups, downs, victories, draws and defeats is a remarkably loyal fanbase.
That loyalty has been tested more than ever in recent seasons, goodness knows we have suffered, and with little in the way of tangible assets it is a small wonder that Stockport County Football Club remain alive to this day.
But where there is life, there is hope and where there is love, there is passion.
We passionately believe that supporters are the greatest asset of any football club and deserve a greater influence over how their club is managed.
Consider this: had County supporters had £50k available to invest when the 2015 consortium was formed, a 10% stake in Stockport County may have been acquired, collectively-owned by supporters, creating the opportunity to play an active role in running the club. We might have helped to prevent all of the eminently preventable problems of recent seasons. We might have achieved greater leadership and stability at the club. We might still be a Football League team. These are all hypothetical arguments, of course, but with your help now we can make a difference. We can leave the past in the past and works towards a better future.
An example of this proactive approach is the Players Fund, set up by County supporter and Co-op member Steve Gibbon to attract donations from fans wanting to help the manager improve his playing squad.
But an improved playing squad doesn’t help address the issue of County not benefiting from owning tangible assets.
This, therefore, inspires the simple aim of the Supporters’ Co-operative Guardian Account: we want to secure a sustainable future for Stockport County and we feel that the way to achieve this is to build up a significant collectively-owned lump sum to invest in the club, in genuine, equal partnership with other like-minded investors. It can, and will, make a major difference, acquiring a stake for supporters in the club and securing assets for the benefit of the club. Only by working together will we become stronger.
In order to kick-start the Guardian Account, and to demonstrate commitment to this important strategic initiative, £10,000 has already been transferred into the Guardian Account from the existing funds of the Stockport County Supporters’ Co-operative.
